Image Segmentation using Multi-Coloured Active Illumination
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, the use of active illumination is extended to image segmentation, specifically in the case of overlapping particles. This work is based on Multi-Flash Imaging (MFI), originally developed by Mitsubishi Electric Labs, to detect depth discontinuities. Illuminations of different wavelengths are projected from multiple positions, providing additional information about a scene compared to conventional segmentation techniques. Shadows are used to identify true object edges. The identification of nonoccluded particles is made possible by exploiting the fact that shadows are cast on underlying particles. Implementation issues such as selecting the appropriate colour model and number of illuminations are discussed. Image segmentation using the proposed method, canny edge detection and watershed transform are performed on overlapping beach pebbles and granite. Evaluation results confirm that the proposed method is a successful extension of the original method and reveals its increased accuracy when compared with conventional segmentation techniques.

Illumination Invariant Face Alignment Using Multi-band Active Appearance Model
In this study, we present a new multi-band image representation for improving AAM segmentation accuracy for illumination invariant face alignment. AAM is known to be very sensitive to the illumination variations. We have shown that edges, originating from object boundaries are far less susceptible to illumination changes. Here, we propose a contour selector which mostly collects contours origin...
متن کاملAn Automated MR Image Segmentation System Using Multi-layer Perceptron Neural Network
Background: Brain tissue segmentation for delineation of 3D anatomical structures from magnetic resonance (MR) images can be used for neuro-degenerative disorders, characterizing morphological differences between subjects based on volumetric analysis of gray matter (GM), white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), but only if the obtained segmentation results are correct. Due to image arti...
متن کاملVoting-based separation of diffuse and specular pixels - Electronics Letters
Introduction: Most algorithms in computer vision assume that the surfaces in a scene are perfect Lambertian. However, the presence of specular reflection is inevitable in most images. Although many methods have been proposed to separate specular pixels from an image, they have some critical limitations. Some can only deal with uniform coloured objects [1] and some need prior information about t...
متن کاملModified CLPSO-based fuzzy classification System: Color Image Segmentation
Fuzzy segmentation is an effective way of segmenting out objects in images containing both random noise and varying illumination. In this paper, a modified method based on the Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (CLPSO) is proposed for pixel classification in HSI color space by selecting a fuzzy classification system with minimum number of fuzzy rules and minimum number of incorr...
متن کاملA New Algorithm for Skin Lesion Border Detection in Dermoscopy Images
Background: With advances in medical imaging systems, digital dermoscopy has become one of the major imaging modalities in the analysis of skin lesions. Thus, automated segmentation or border detection has a great impact on the subsequent steps of skin cancer computer-aided diagnosis using demoscopy images. Since dermoscopy images suffer from artifacts such as shading and hair, there is a need ...
